I have never sought to
use the pastorate as a platform for the advancement of
American politics. I will not do so now. But I must
state emphatically that I have never been more aware of the
importance of an election than the one coming this November.
I do believe that each of us as Christians are to strive to
act as salt and light [Matt 5:13-14] as we
participate in elections the out- comes of which can either
further or hinder our culture toward those moral principles
set forth within God’s Word. Especially within a democracy,
believers should exercise their freedom and responsibility
to vote for candidates who are competent, will serve as
strong and wise leaders, and who are people who will seek to
uphold the moral values revealed within Scripture.
For unbelievers who
have not Christ [The Rock], how unsettling conditions in our
world must be. They are without Christ and without hope. On
the other hand, Christians rest securely on the knowledge of
what the Lord authoritatively declares in Ps 103:19
- “The Lord has established His throne in the heavens, and
His sovereignty rules over all.”
Believers have the
security of knowing that history is in God’s hands, that God
causes all things to work together for good, Rom. 8:28,
that we are the objects of His beloved care, Ps 23:1,
and, that no matter what happens in our wobbly world, we
will enjoy forever the blessedness of our great eternal
salvation with Christ in heaven, Jn 10:27-30.
But unbelievers especially those residing in our Country
have much cause for alarm. In their spiritual darkness,
certainly they have no fear of what may be imminent, the
wrath of a longsuffering but holy God, Rom 3:18.
Since the U.S. Supreme
Court ruling of Roe v. Wade thirty-six years ago this
coming January, parents have murdered their own helpless
children at the rate of between one to two million [in our
Nation alone] children per year using the most barbaric
methods to do so. Their doctors perform these killings
because Presidents nominate judges who do not recognize that
murder is not a choice in our Country. God’s mercy and
patience toward us has been startling. But there will likely
be an end to out Creator’s striving. God has generously
blessed our nation, and therefore He likely will hold our
Nation especially accountable, Lk 12:48.
Notwithstanding recent
scientific advances which clearly magnify what is evident
within Creation, that evolution is a lie and that our world
was made by a supernatural, omnipotent and infinitely wise
Creator, our educational system is permitted to censure
Creationism in the science classes of our public school
systems. Ps 19:1-2 declares that God’s
creative glory is seen clearly in the universe, “The heavens
are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is
declaring the work of His hands.
Scripture indicates
that all governing authorities are established by God
and the Lord commands His children to submit to and to honor
those whom the Lord raises up to govern over us. [See
Rom 13:1-2 and 1 Peter 2:17.]
Certainly the clear exception is where ruling authorities
command us to do something contrary to God’s Word. This is
illustrated when Jewish authorities command the Apostles to
stop proclaiming Christ in Jerusalem. Scripture records
their response in Acts 5:27-29 – “But Peter
and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than
men.”
Yes we must submit to
and honor those whom God grants governmental authority over
us. We must love homosexuals who like we are sinners in need
of God’s forgiveness. We must also patiently endeavor to
restore the true Science of “origin” into the class room. We
must pray for God’s blessing on our Nation, 1 Tim
2:1-3. But at the same time, we must strive to
appear as lights amidst a crooked and perverse generation.
With the light given to us by the Lord, we must make sure
that we vote intelligently and wisely this November with the
above mentioned moral issues at stake clearly in mind.
